Save the Girl Child

Around 1o million female foetuses have been aborted in past 20 years. Sex ratio has declined further from 2001 Census. While the sex ratio in 2001 census was around 926 females to 1000 males in 0-6 age group, by 2003-04, according to Registrar General of India the sex ratio has become around 880 females to 1000 males in 0-6 age group.
At heart of this is the ultrasound machine. Parents find out the gender of the foetus and when it is female, abortion ensues. Government has enacted PNDT law to prohibit communication of sex of the foetus during ultrasound examination. However it would be safe to say that significant number of ultrasound clinic violate this law with impunity.

The Supreme Court had ordered Central Government to create National Inspection and Monitoring Committee. However this committee has inspected merely 300 machines out of 30,000 machines. This is Contempt of Court. The National Inspection and Monitoring Committee has only 1 full time member.

What is needed is for the Central Government to employ 100 full time members. Each full time member should inspect atleast 2 machines every day along with officials from the office of Appropriate Authority for the district. Only then 30,000 machines can be inspected within a year and the problem solved.
